Finding Opportunity In That Danger

“And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me? ..but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite…and the LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household”. 11 Sam.6:10-11

Fear is a powerful emotion that can misform the reality of things. When fear takes grip, it reduces our focus to only see dangers and obstacles. This sense of danger now weakens our judgment, making it difficult to see the opportunities and possibilities that may also exist within the same circumstance.

For instance, fear of failure can prevent someone from taking risks that could lead to personal or business growth. Instead of seeing a new opportunity as a chance to advance, he might only see  possible failure or loss. No doubt, fear can negatively impact our ability to think right, leading to wrong decision-making, and eventually resulting in missed opportunities that could be beneficial to us.

However, it is also important to recognize that fear is a natural emotion. There will always be reasons to fear, but we should not allow those reasons to dominate our thinking. We should always strive to free our minds, and focus on  positive outcomes. It is possible to balance our awareness of danger, while at the same time, open to possibilities within the danger.

“And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household. And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness”. 2 Samuel 6:11-12.

We see from the above Bible passage, that the same danger which David feared, became a source of blessing for Obededom. Obededom’s ability to see opportunity in the same danger David dreaded was due to his understanding and management of that danger, transforming it into a blessing.

This doesn’t mean we should ignor real dangers, but rather we should not allow them to control our minds. When we embrace the fact that there is an opportunity within danger, this can lead to  a better decision making, where although we admit there is fear, we refuse to allow it to control our decision.
