On 28 May 2024, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated a fully constructed sanitation facility to the Isiwu Junior Grammar School in Lagos, Nigeria. A donation ceremony was held at the school in conjunction with the commemoration of the 2024 Menstrual Hygiene Day, which is observed globally on 28 May.
The Church has collaborated with WaterAid Nigeria to provide proper sanitation and improve access to clean, safe, and affordable drinking water for people throughout the country.

“We are so grateful for the Church of Jesus Christ and the incredible work we have done together,” said Dr Adebayo Alao, WaterAid Lagos Program Lead. “We are particularly happy to be commissioning this project while we commemorate World Hygiene Day. Menstruation is a very significant stage of a girl-child, and we all understand that proper sanitation facilities and clean water are necessary to be hygienic during this time.”
Representing the Church was President Charles Okoyomon, a counselor in the Lagos Nigeria Ikorodu Stake. In his remarks he noted that the Church desires to follow Jesus Christ and his admonition to love and take care of our neighbors.
“The Church is committed to providing for those in need. We stand at the ready to bless this community, and we will focus on those that need it the most,” said President Okoyomon. “We are also grateful to be able to work with like minded organizations like WaterAid Nigeria whose projects are in line with the humanitarian visions of our Church.”
Amin Olawale Ibrahim Apaishile, Vice Chairman of the Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area expressed his gratitude towards the Church for choosing the Ikorodu community for this important donation. “We are grateful to be the beneficiaries of this laudable project. The people in this community are feeling your presence. We appreciate your kind gesture towards ensuring that our people live a more comfortable life.”
James Oyedele, Deputy Director of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources commended the Church and WaterAid for their effective collaboration in providing safe drinking water and sanitation to all Nigerians. “As we all know, if there is no water, there is no sanitation, so water plays a key role in the health of a community and a country. Thank you for your great works.”
WASHCOM Chairman in Rolu-Parafa, Olalekan Onafuye, commended the Church and WaterAid Nigeria for the implementation of this facility in his community. “We want to thank you for your efforts and also want to assure you that we will maintain this facility at all times, and we welcome more projects in the future.”
One of the highlights of the donation ceremony was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the dignitaries at the event, committing to the proper maintenance and upkeep of the new sanitation facility.
