Nigerian Women in Information Technology, NWIT, Oyo State Branch wants more women and girls to be versatile in Information Communication Technology.
This was the prime focus of the association at this year’s Girls in ICT Day Celebration held at the Local government Commission Hall, Agodi Secretariat. Ibadan.
An Expert in Information Technology Professor Adenike Osofiso observed that statistics of women in ICT was low compared to their male counterparts.
According to her, the programme was part of bridging the gap because more women who made it in ICT would expose the girls”
Professor Osofiso, who is the first Female Professor of Computer Science in Africa, advised parents and schools proprietress to leverage on the opportunities embedded in ICT to broaden the knowledge of children early in life
“Right from kindergarten let us expose our children to IT tools both male and female from day one they will begin to appreciate IT tools”
In a remark, former National President of Nigerian Women in Information Technology, Dr Florence Babalola maintained that the benefits of leveraging in ICT would enhance local manufacturing to boost the economy.
” ICT in particular most of the women in market doing business we found out that there is need for women to be encourage to leverage on ICT so that they can use it to improve the economy contribution”
On his part, Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade. expressed delight that the girl child was gradually embracing ICT.
Represented by an official in the Ministry, Mrs Aboyede Ojo, the Commissioner commended the Organizer for amplifying the voices of women and girls.
Earlier, Oyo State Coordinator, Nigerian Women in Information Technology, Mrs Samatu Adejoke, had explained that the event was to celebrate girls in ICT.
Mrs Adejoke noted that selected girls in secondary schools had been trained in some courses in Artificial Intelligence, calling on other schools to key into the empowerment programmes.
The event featured goodwill messages from Director ICT, Oyo State Management Information Centre, Office of the Governor, Mrs Raheemat Adabanija and presentation of Artificial intelligence projects by girls in ICT from some selected Secondary schools in Ibadan.
