Kidnapping of archbishop reignites church calls for police reforms in Nigeria

Godwin Okpala

The Church and the wider community are rejoicing over the safe return of Archbishop Godwin Okpala and his driver, a testament to the power of faith, prayer, and community solidarity. Their release marks the end of an ordeal that began on December 6, 2024, when the retired Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi went missing en route to Umuchu for a funeral.

The disappearance of the 75-year-old prelate sparked widespread concern, leading to fervent calls for his release from religious leaders, community stakeholders, and concerned citizens. These appeals, rooted in compassion and unity, underscored the urgent need to protect the safety and dignity of all individuals, particularly in light of rising security challenges in the region.

This incident has once again highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive police reforms and the implementation of state and community policing systems to address the growing threats of abductions and violence. Strengthening security measures remains critical to safeguarding lives and restoring peace in the region.

Special thanks are extended to His Grace, The Most Revd Alexander Chibuzo Ibezim, PhD, Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger and Bishop of the Diocese of Awka, for his unwavering prayers and leadership. The Rt Revd Ndubuisi Obi, Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, and other bishops within the province and the Church of Nigeria who also played vital roles in offering support and intercessions during this challenging time.

As the community celebrates this moment of relief and thanksgiving, the Church urges continued prayers for lasting peace and security across the region. This event serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create a safer and more compassionate society for all.
