Nigeria is experiencing a surge in cross-border crimes, such as people trafficking and drug smuggling and it hopes technology will help curb the problem.
Nigeria is leveraging technology to improve border security using data-driven strategies.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recently cooperated with the World Customs Organisation (WCO) to train officials on modern techniques for fortifying Nigerian borders.
The n-Cee training was competed at the NCS headquarters in Abuja providing officers with data collection and analytical skills to improve national security and enforcement operations.
Kikelomo Adeola, NCS deputy comptroller-general of customs in charge of ICT Modernisation, emphasised the strategic significance of the training in accomplishing border security goals.
“This training underscores the Comptroller-General of Customs’ commitment to secure our nation’s borders,” she told the crowd.
Jean Bigirimana, a WCO facilitator, praised the NCS for using technology to improve border security.
He stated that the n-Ceen initiative was developed to help member countries use intelligence-driven solutions and make informed decisions.
“The n-Ceen application enables customs administrations to collect and harmonise data, which can then be used to target high-risk cases effectively,” said Bigirimana.
