The Nigerian government and the European Union (EU) are working to realise technology’s revolutionary potential for mutual benefit.

During a meeting between the nation’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, and the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, it was affirmed that the Ministry is dedicated to establishing collaborative research centres in fields such as renewable energy and climate-smart agriculture.

Emphasizing the commitment to this partnership, the Minister highlighted the objectives of capacity building, research infrastructure enhancement, and fostering ties with European research institutions.

“Investment in scientific research and development is vital for economic growth. Nigeria is committed to creating a conducive environment for such investments. Our ministry will focus on building capacity, enhancing research infrastructure, and fostering collaborations with European research institutions. By leveraging our strengths in renewable energy, biotechnology, and space research, we can drive significant advancements benefiting both Nigeria and the European Union.”

The Minister added that the partnership between Nigeria and the European Union is built on mutual respect, shared goals, and a commitment to innovation and development.

“By working together, we can achieve remarkable outcomes benefiting our regions and the world.”

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria Samuela Isopi emphasized the anticipation of increased Nigerian involvement in the Erasmus and Horizon Europe Program, recognized as the largest research initiative globally.

We had found that Nigeria despite being blessed with talents and a lot of research institutions was not benefiting from that collaboration, so we started working together and I am happy to say that on the current program, we are now funding twenty-seven projects.

She reaffirmed that Nigeria is very fast increasing its Position in the ranks and is now one of the top ten countries in Africa working with the European Union research.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation Science and Technology, Esuabana Nko Asanye appealed to the European Union to assist in training Scientific Officers and technologists in good European Scientific institutes.
