Nigeria is turning to CCTV and related technologies to address the high levels of highway criminality.

Nigeria is considering installing closed circuit television (CCTV) camera equipment along major highways to combat widespread criminality.

Highways are spots for violent crime in the West African country, with kidnapping gangs, armed robbers, and alleged bandits laying siege to terrorise citizens.

David Umahi, minister of works, presented the CCTV camera plans while establishing a committee to develop the cashless tolling system for the Abuja-Keffi Expressway and the dualisation of the Keffi-Akwanga-Makurdi road.

While the e-tolling system aims to promote a sustainable transportation environment, there is hope that advanced CCTV technology can solve highway criminality.

“Part of the (committee’s) assignment will be how we can install CCTV cameras, and also have solar light through the entire route of the project,” Umahi said.

Umahi added that stations along highways will allow officers to monitor CCTV footage in real time.
