Nigerian Communications Satellite (Nigcomsat) has partnered with Eutelsat OneWeb to provide advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite services across the West African country.

Through this partnership, Nigcomsat will utilize OneWeb’s network to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity solutions to various Nigerian sectors, including government services, businesses and rural communities.

“This partnership marks a major milestone for Nigcomsat, allowing us to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide with OneWeb’s advanced LEO satellite technology. Together, we will deliver scalable and reliable connectivity solutions to drive growth across government services, businesses, and communities nationwide,” said Nigcomsat MD Jane Egerton-Idehen.

She added that Eutelsat OneWeb and Nigcomsat aim to combine resources to foster innovation, accelerate digital transformation and expand connectivity opportunities within Nigeria and beyond.

Eutelsat OneWeb has been growing its reach across Africa in recent times.

In August 2024, Eutelsat Group and Bayobab announced a multi-year agreement for LEO capacity on Eutelsat’s OneWeb constellation to deliver fixed connectivity services across Africa.

In May 2024, Liquid Intelligent Technologies announced a distribution partner agreement with Eutelsat Group to make enterprise-grade LEO satellite services available in Africa through its Liquid Dataport business.

In January 2024, Eutelsat OneWeb signed a deal with specialist connectivity provider Paratus South Africa to enhance Paratus’ connectivity offering in South Africa and provide satellite connectivity to more rural areas.

Eutelsat and OneWeb merged in 2023 and formed Eutelsat Group a fully integrated GEO-LEO satellite operator, with a fleet of 36 geostationary (GEO) satellites and a constellation of more than 600 LEO satellites.
