The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has embarked on a landmark modernisation project aimed at revolutionising its operations and enhancing trade facilitation.
The Trade Modernisation Project (TMP), a 20-year concession agreement, was signed on May 27, 2023, between the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by the NCS Board, and TMP Ltd, the concessionaire.
According to Mr. Ahmed Ogunshola, General Manager of TMP, the project is designed to leverage technology to streamline export and import clearances, payment of duties, and release of goods. “We are deploying cutting-edge technology to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of NCS operations,” he explained.
To ensure sustainability and knowledge transfer, NCS personnel have been involved in the project’s design and development from the outset. “We have worked closely with NCS officers from day one, ensuring that they are fully equipped to manage the project independently by the final phase,” Ogunshola emphasized.
The modernisation project is expected to generate over $250 billion for the Federal Government over its 20-year lifespan. TMP Ltd will invest $3.2 billion to deliver the project, which will be implemented in three phases. By the final phase, NCS personnel will fully manage the project, with the concessionaire stepping back from management.
The project’s successful implementation is expected to make NCS a model among its peers, enhancing its reputation and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.
