McDonald Fellowships 2026, UK – Fully Funded Research Opportunity for International Scholars

The McDonald Fellowships 2026, funded by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF), provide fully funded opportunities for early-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries to advance their careers in multiple sclerosis (MS) research. This two-year fellowship enables recipients to undertake a research placement or training at a renowned institution outside their home country. The program is designed to foster global collaboration, build research capacity in under-resourced regions, and ultimately improve MS treatment and understanding worldwide.

Two specialized tracks are offered: the MSIF-ECTRIMS Fellowship, in partnership with the European Committee for Treatment and Research in MS, and the MSIF-FranceSEP Fellowship, supported by France Sclerose En Plaques. Eligible research areas include neurodegeneration, neurorehabilitation, MS epidemiology in LMICs, and more. The program not only funds research but also helps fellows build lasting international networks and return home equipped to lead impactful research or clinical initiatives.

Fellowship Benefits

  • Duration: 2 years

  • Funding: €55,000 per year (paid to the host institution)

  • Support Includes:

  • Follow-up Support: Guidance to continue MS research in the fellow’s home country after completion

Applicants must be early-career researchers from countries classified as low-, lower-middle-, or upper-middle-income by the World Bank. A postgraduate degree and research interest in MS are required.

Q2: Can the fellowship support an ongoing PhD?
Yes. If your PhD began within six months prior to application, you are eligible for co-funding through the fellowship.

Q3: Do I need a confirmed host institution before applying?
Yes. Applicants must secure a commitment from a host supervisor at a recognized research institution before submitting their application.

Q4: Is there any support after the fellowship?
Yes. Fellows are encouraged and supported to return home to continue MS research or clinical work with the skills and knowledge they gained abroad.

Q5: What kind of research is supported?
Any research aligned with MS—including neuroimmunology, neurorehabilitation, remyelination, and public health—is eligible.

Conclusion
