In a bid to embrace digital transformation, Lagos State, located in the southwestern region of Nigeria, has announced plans to introduce Nigeria’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidelines, setting the stage for the responsible use of technology.

Olatubosun Alake, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, revealed the initiative at the 4th Zenith Bank Tech Fair in Lagos.

According to Alake, the regulations are being developed in collaboration with the Federal AI Collective and are expected to be finalised by the first or second quarter of next year.

He stated, “This initiative will pave the way for responsible AI development in Nigeria, highlighting the state’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement. Our digital initiative, including the enterprise architecture project, is standardising and harmonising our digital data assets to ensure effective AI implementation.”

He further added, “This effort is essential for delivering personalised services to our citizens and ensuring we are prepared for the AI revolution. AI’s impact will be felt regardless of our readiness, which makes events like the Zenith Bank Tech Fair vital for promoting a proactive approach.”

Additionally, through the Science Research and Innovation Council, Lagos State is funding AI projects at local universities such as the University of Lagos and Lagos State University. These funds aim to enhance academic contributions to AI, blockchain, and infrastructure development.

In a panel discussion, Oladejo Olawunmi, Director of Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), highlighted the importance of AI legislation and the agency’s role in shaping a legal framework for AI.

“When we talk about AI, we are addressing transparency, trust, and data security. At NITDA, we facilitate collaboration among stakeholders to draft regulations that will guide the industry,” he explained.

NITDA is currently developing the National AI Strategy, which includes consultations with both local and international experts on the future of AI in Nigeria.

“This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that Nigeria not only keeps pace with global AI developments but also establishes a robust regulatory framework to support long-term growth,” Olawunmi concluded.
