The Consul General of India in Lagos, Chandramouli K. Kern, has reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to technology transfer, capacity building, and healthcare support for Nigeria. Speaking at a Free Health Camp in the Ilupeju community, Lagos, on Monday, Kern highlighted the deep-rooted bilateral ties between India and Nigeria, which date back to 1964.
The camp was jointly organized by the Consulate General of India, the Indian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Importers in Nigeria (IPMIN), and specialist doctors and paramedics from the visiting Indian Naval Ship, INS Tushil. It provided free general health check-ups, specialist consultations, basic medications, and health awareness sessions to about 500 Ilupeju residents—well beyond the initial target of 300 beneficiaries.
Kern emphasised the Indian philosophy of global unity, stating that the event was a reflection of the cordial relationship between Nigerians and the Indian community residing in Nigeria.
He also announced plans for India to assist in building healthcare centers in Nigeria, reducing the need for Nigerians to travel to India for medical care.
The Consul General further highlighted the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Initiative, a capacity-building program offering 500 fully-funded slots annually to Nigerians. The initiative provides free visas, tickets, accommodations, training, and books, underscoring India’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s development.
“Nigerians who have not yet benefited from this program are encouraged to apply. The government of India remains 100 percent committed to this initiative,” Kern stated.
IPMIN, a key organiser of the health camp, played a central role in its success. Vice President of IPMIN, Hemanth Sharma, expressed satisfaction with the large turnout and emphasised the importance of giving back to the Ilupeju community, which has shared a long-standing cordial relationship with Indian residents.
General Secretary of IPMIN, T. Venket Subramanian, noted that the program surpassed expectations by catering to the health needs of more residents than originally planned.
