A food communications analyst, Blessing Ikechukwu, has emphasised the potential of irradiation technology to revolutionise food preservation in Nigeria.
“By reducing spoilage and extending shelf life, irradiation can significantly mitigate the country’s substantial food losses, contributing to improved food security and sustainability,” Ikechukwu said.
Traditionally, food preservation in Nigeria has relied on methods like canning, refrigeration and drying. While effective, these techniques often face limitations, particularly in rural areas with limited infrastructure. Irradiation, on the other hand, offers a modern, efficient and safe solution.
“The process involves exposing food to controlled amounts of ionizing radiation, such as gamma rays or X-rays. This treatment eliminates harmful microorganisms and insects, preventing spoilage and foodborne illnesses without affecting the food’s taste, texture, or nutritional value”, explained Ikechukwu.
Food loss and waste are major challenges in Nigeria, with studies suggesting that up to 40% of food produced annually is lost between harvest and consumption. This is exacerbated by inadequate transportation, storage facilities, and power supply, particularly for perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, and grains.
Continuing, he said “Irradiation technology can play a crucial role in addressing these issues. By extending shelf life and reducing spoilage, it can help ensure that more food reaches consumers, reducing waste and improving food security.”
While irradiation has gained acceptance in many countries, its adoption in Nigeria has been limited due to factors such as the limited number of irradiation facilities.
However, the potential benefits of this technology are significant, and increased investment and awareness are essential to unlock its full potential.
“As Nigeria’s population continues to grow and urbanize, the demand for food will also increase,.By embracing innovative solutions like irradiation, the country can enhance its food systems, reduce waste, and ensure a more sustainable future for its citizens”, he pointed out.
