KU Leuven, in accordance with Flemish legislation, provides partial tuition fee waivers to eligible non-EEA students who meet specific residency-related criteria in Belgium. These waivers allow students to benefit from significantly reduced tuition fees, paying the same amount as domestic Belgian students. The waiver remains valid as long as the student’s status does not change during their academic program.

Scholarship Type, Coverage, and Duration

  • Type: Partial Tuition Fee Waiver
  • Coverage: Students who receive the waiver pay tuition fees equivalent to those of Belgian domestic students. Check the tuition fees here.
  • Duration: The waiver is valid throughout the duration of the student’s program, provided their residency status remains unchanged.
  • Available Scholarships: There is no limit on the number of waivers awarded.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Degree Types:

  • Bachelor’s programs
  • Master’s programs
  • Advanced Master’s programs

Eligible Programs:
All Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Advanced Master’s programs offered at KU Leuven.

Eligible Nationalities:
This scholarship is available to non-EEA students from the following regions:

  • Africa: Includes countries such as Algeria, Angola, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, and more.
  • Asia: Includes countries such as India, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Thailand, and more.
  • North America: Canada and the United States.
  • Central America: Includes countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica, and more.
  • South America: Includes countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and more.
  • Oceania: Includes countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and more.
  • Europe (Non-EEA): Includes countries such as Ukraine, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and more.

Residency Requirements

Students must meet at least one of the following conditions by December 31 of the academic year:

  1. Belgian Residency Status:
    • Permanent residency.
    • Temporary residency based on:
      • Refugee status
      • In the process of being recognised as a refugee
      • Subsidiary protection status
  2. Family Reunion in Belgium:
    • Students residing in Belgium due to family reunion.
  3. Long-Term Residence in Belgium:
    • Students who can prove uninterrupted residence in Belgium for at least 12 months (not for work or study purposes).
  4. Family Members of EEA Nationals:
    • The spouse or registered partner of an EEA national.
    • Direct descendants (biological or adopted children) of the EEA national or their partner.
    • Parents of the EEA national or their partner.
  5. Temporary Protection Status:
    • Students residing in Belgium with temporary protection status.

How to Apply

  1. Application Timeline:
    Applications open at the beginning of the academic year and must be submitted before the end of the same academic year.
  2. Evaluation Process:
    • Students who meet the eligibility requirements are automatically granted the waiver.
    • There is no additional assessment or competitive process.
  3. Required Documents:
    Applicants must provide official documents proving that they meet one of the residency-related eligibility conditions. Examples include:
    • Proof of Belgian residency status.
    • Family reunion documents.
    • Evidence of uninterrupted residence in Belgium.
  4. Submission Process:
    • All documents must be submitted to the KU Leuven Student Accounting and Mobility Team by the end of the academic year.
    • Ensure all eligibility conditions are met before the deadline, as no conditional applications will be accepted.
