The ICARUS Climate Research Centre at Maynooth University is excited to announce a fully funded PhD scholarship for a student commencing studies in September 2025. This opportunity is part of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-funded research project focused on event attribution for the island of Ireland.

About the Project

The PhD research will apply established event attribution techniques from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group to analyze historical Irish climatic extremes from the past decade. The goal is to build a comprehensive understanding of how human-induced climate change has influenced extreme weather events in Ireland. The project will contribute to a catalogue of retrospective analyses and support broader initiatives, including near real-time event analyses and community engagement.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Peter Thorne, alongside a senior postdoctoral researcher (to be appointed), ICARUS colleagues, and collaborators from the WWA group at Imperial College London. Regular, fully funded short-term visits to London will facilitate collaboration.

Scholarship Value and Duration

  • Value: €25,000 per year (inclusive of fees)
  • Duration: 4 years (subject to satisfactory annual progress reviews)
  • Start Date: September 2025

Student Responsibilities

The selected PhD student will:

  • Lead the analysis of past extreme weather events in Ireland to determine the role of human-induced climate change.
  • Select representative extreme events from the past decade and conduct retrospective analysis using WWA methodologies.
  • Contribute to broader research initiatives, including near real-time climate event assessments, outreach, and communication efforts.
