Tell Me About The CLARITY-Africa PhD Scholarships:

The CLARITY-Africa PhD Scholarship is a unique opportunity for applicants interested in addressing the impacts of climate change on environmental risks, specifically related to heat, flooding, and drought in African cities. The CLARITY-Africa project is a collaboration between Imperial College London, the University of Ghana, AIMS Research and Innovation Centre, and other leading universities. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to pursue their doctoral studies at either the University of Ghana or AIMS RIC. PhD students will be engaged in co-producing transformative knowledge and will receive full funding for their tuition, research, stipend, travel, and other related expenses.

Who can Apply for the CLARITY-Africa PhD Scholarships?

The eligibility criteria include:

  • Applicants from any African country are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a related discipline such as climate science, demography, economics, geography, environmental science, public health, environmental health, or mathematical and physical sciences.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a willingness to research topics aligned with the CLARITY-Africa research focus (heat, flooding, and drought in the identified African cities).
  • Familiarity with analytical and statistical methods is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills are required.
  • Applicants should have research potential, evidenced by academic performance and involvement in relevant academic activities.
  • University of Ghana PhD Year 1 students are also eligible to apply.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Statement of purpose (max 2,000 words) explaining your research interests and how the financial support will benefit your research career.
  • A two-page research proposal.
  • Complete academic CV, including publications and research experience.
  • Copies of recent graduate transcripts.
  • Copies of graduate certificates.
  • Names and contact details of two academic referees.

Which Countries Are Eligible?

  • AIMS RIC accepts applicants from all African countries.
  • University of Ghana only accepts applicants from Ghana nationals.

Where will the Award be Taken?

The award will be taken at either the University of Ghana or AIMS Research and Innovation Centre, depending on the applicant’s preference and eligibility.
