The permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Esuabana Nko-Asanye has said that the ministry is committed to making gender equality a central component of its innovation agenda across all projects and programmes.

Speaking through the ministry’s gender head, Dola Gambo at a one-day workshop on Advancing Gender Mainstreaming in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) held in Abuja, Nko-Asanye said gender inclusion is not an afterthought but a deliberate and systematic approach to integrating gender perspectives into every stage of the ministry’s mandate and vision.

She noted that while STI remains the foundation of national development with the potential to transform every sector of the economy, gender disparities persist due to barriers in access to funding, mentorship and technology infrastructure.

A statement by the ministry’s head of press and public relations unit, Pauline Sule said the permanent secretary emphasised that the workshop provided an opportunity to reflect, share experiences and chart practical pathways for implementing gender mainstreaming across the STI sector. She added that the knowledge and recommendations from the discussions would guide institutional strengthening within and beyond the ministry.

Nko-Asanye urged participants to engage actively and share ideas that will help build an inclusive future where innovation serves everyone equally.

Earlier, the gender desk secretary of the ministry, Eneh Omawumi described the workshop as timely and essential, stressing that gender mainstreaming in science and technology is not only about fairness but about efficiency, innovation and sustainability for societal progress.
