The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology has reaffirmed its commitment to driving Nigeria’s economic development by harnessing the power of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) across key sectors.

Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, disclosed this during a sectoral retreat in Abuja on Tuesday, focused on the implementation of the Presidential Priorities, Ministerial Deliverables, and Performance Management System (PMS).

The retreat emphasized the critical role of STI in achieving the Eight Presidential Priorities outlined by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The advancement of Science, Technology, and Innovation is critical to realizing our national aspirations,” Chief Nnaji stated. He stressed the need for collective action to overcome challenges, develop actionable plans, and deliver tangible results.

According to him, collaboration across the entire STI ecosystem is essential for unlocking new growth opportunities, creating jobs, and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians.

Nnaji also underscored the importance of a robust Performance Management System to ensure transparency, accountability, and an effective feedback mechanism. He noted that a well-implemented PMS would translate efforts into real benefits for the Nigerian populace.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Esubana Nko Asanye, emphasized the retreat’s purpose to refine strategies, enhance the Performance Management System, and drive results that fast-track national development.

Adding to the conversation, Dr. Adamu Tutuwa Jummai, Director General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), highlighted the urgency for Nigeria to transition from a consumption-based to a production-driven economy. She stressed that no country can achieve sustainable development while relying heavily on imported goods.

Jummai expressed FIIRO’s commitment to supporting the Ministry’s mandate, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and ensuring that the country’s technological challenges are addressed vigorously.

The retreat aimed to find solutions to complex issues, improve service delivery, and enhance administrative efficiency, all while aligning STI stakeholders’ efforts with the Presidential Priorities, which include economic growth, social inclusion, infrastructural development, security, and good governance.
