Sequel to the recent Presidential directive for a thorough review of the membership of Governing Boards of Federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Education has postponed the inauguration of the Governing Councils.
ConsumerConnect reports the Ministry of Education initially, had scheduled event for May 30-31, 2024.
Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relation at the Federal Ministry of Education, in a statement Monday, May 26, said the government expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the postponement.
The statement titled: “Postponement of the Inauguration and Retreat for Membership of Governing Councils of Federal Tertiary Institutions”, noted: “The Federal Ministry of Education regrets to announce the postponement of the Inauguration and Retreat for Pro-Chancellors, Chairmen, and Members of Governing Councils of Federal Tertiary Institutions earlier scheduled for Thursday, 30th and Friday, 31st May 2024.
“This is as a result of the Presidential directive, as conveyed by the State House Press Release dated 23rd May, 2024, for a comprehensive review of the membership of the Governing Councils of Federal Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.
“Further updates will be communicated in due course.”
It is recalled the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in response to public reactions to alleged non-reflection of the principle of Federal Character in the membership of the Governing Councils, recently directed a comprehensive review of the Boards days after the Federal Ministry of Education issued the first membership lists.
Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, had stated President Tinubu had observed the nominations did not reflect the Federal Character of the country.
