The first edition of the 2025 Standing Committee Meeting of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has officially commenced in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. Themed “The Bond of Peace: The Core of the Life and Ministry of the Church” (Ephesians 4:3), the five-day gathering brings together delegates from across Nigeria.

Hosted at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church and St. Peter’s Deanery, Hospital Road, Port Harcourt, the meeting is expected to welcome over 700 delegates from more than 160 dioceses of the Church of Nigeria. Attendees include Archbishops, Bishops and their wives, clergy, and laity.

As a vital arm of the Church’s General Synod, the Standing Committee plays a key role in governing the Church between triennial synod meetings, convening twice annually to deliberate on critical issues. This year’s meeting is presided over by The Most Rev’d Dr. Henry C. Ndukuba, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria.

Speaking at the venue, The Rt. Rev’d Dr. Emmanuel Okwuchi Oko-Jaja, Bishop of the Diocese of Niger Delta and host of the event, described the 2025 Standing Committee Meeting as one of the most significant in the Church’s history.

Highlighting the relevance of the theme, Bishop Oko-Jaja emphasized the urgent need for unity in the Christian community, especially in light of growing divisions.

“The theme is timely and crucial because, in today’s world—both within and outside the Church—we see increasing discord. However, the Word of God calls us to unity and peace, and we must uphold that.”

Expressing optimism, he urged Christians to embrace peace, discard divisive tendencies, and work towards the nation’s progress.

Seamless Arrangements for Delegates

Speaking on logistics, Sir Franklin Gigi Dienye-Umin, Chairman of the Alternate Planning Committee, assured attendees of smooth arrangements for accommodation, security, and medical support.

He warmly welcomed delegates, describing Rivers State as a peaceful and hospitable destination.

“We have made thorough preparations to ensure all delegates are well accommodated. Security measures are in place with the support of government agencies, and our internal teams, including the Boys Brigade and Youth Fellowship, are working diligently to ensure a successful event.”

With all arrangements set, the 2025 Standing Committee Meeting promises to be a spiritually enriching and impactful gathering for the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.
