British School at Rome Associate Fellowships 2025

The British School at Rome (BSR) is now accepting applications for its prestigious Associate Fellowships.

These fellowships offer scholars formal affiliation and academic access to the BSR community—without the need for residential commitment or financial support from BSR. They are ideal for researchers who are already supported by external funding or institutions and wish to engage with Italy’s cultural, social, political, or religious heritage.

Fellows gain access to one of Rome’s most comprehensive English-language academic libraries, with over 120,000 volumes. Key subject areas include:

The Archive also contains significant photographic and documentary collections, including the renowned Ward-Perkins and Ashby collections, offering rich resources for international scholarship.

Who Can Apply?

This fellowship is open to applicants of all nationalities. However, applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be a British or Commonwealth citizen

  • Hold a PhD from a UK university

  • Be an established scholar at a UK university (regardless of nationality)

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be based in Rome for the fellowship duration

  • Must hold at least a first degree at the time of application

  • Must be able to provide documentation of nationality or residency if requested

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Academic value and feasibility of the research project

  • Relevance to the BSR’s mission and resources

  • Applicant’s academic background and experience

  • Potential contributions to the BSR’s scholarly community

  • Promotion of Italian studies within the UK and Commonwealth
