About ten days ago, Christian Mbilli was “simply” the holder of the interim title in the super middleweight (-76.2 kg) of the WBC, which is one of the four major boxing federations. It dated back to June 2025 and his success against Maciej Sulecki. From now on, the 30-year-old pugilist is officially the titular world champion of the category.

This Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the World Boxing Council (WBC, World Boxing Federation) confirmed its new status. Mexican Canelo Alvarez, who held all the super-middleweight belts, was beaten in September by American Terence Crawford. However, the latter then decided to hang up his gloves in December, against all odds, thus leaving the belt vacant.

A consecration for the 30-year-old boxer.

“I am very happy to be world champion. As everyone followed him, I have been the number one challenger for years. I am finally recognized as a world champion, which was my goal as a boxer,”

he said at the press conference.

Unify the belts
Christian Mbilli is now the world champion. And in view of his record, it is well deserved. The native of Yaoundé is simply unbeaten as a pro. In 30 fights, he won 29 victories, including 4 by KO, for a single draw. This one dates back to September 2025 against Lester Martinez. Now more anticipated than ever, the 30-year-old boxer should soon return to the ring. First to confirm his status, then for another reason.

“I’m a champion, but when you look at the rankings, I’m number two. Canelo remains the number one, despite the fact that he lost to Crawford. As he retired, he keeps his place. I would like to face it and why not unify the belts of the category,”

 he recently claimed.

Moreover, Christian Mbilli is already preparing. His promoter, Eye of the Tiger, ensures that the next fight will be soon, but against whom?

Several potential opponents
Christian Mbilli said it, he wants to face Canelo Alvarez. However, the Mexican is not the only potential opponent of the Franco-Cameroonian. The Guatemalan Lester Martinez, whom he faced in September 2025 (draw), is also in the sights. Nevertheless, the most concrete discussions take place with Jaime Munguia. If this materializes, the fight should take place in the first quarter of 2026.

So we understood, Mbilli should soon return to the ring. This time with a status to assume, more than an invincibility to preserve.
