Apply for the European Union CREATE Green Africa Scholarship for African Students

The European Union (EU), under its Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, has funded the “Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica)” project. This initiative is designed to enhance climate-related skills and qualifications across Africa through academic mobility and experience sharing. The consortium consists of six African Partner Institutions and one EU Technical Partner:

• University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM, Tanzania) – Coordinating Institution
• Mekelle University (MU, Ethiopia)
• Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU, Zimbabwe)
• University of the Free State (UFS, South Africa)
• University of Ghana (UG, Ghana)
• University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT, Nigeria)
• University of Southern Denmark (SDU, Denmark) – Technical Partner

• Submission Deadline: September 6, 2024.
• Note: Different deadlines apply for admissions to each host university.

Objectives of the CREATE Green Africa Scholarship

The CREATE-GreenAfrica project aims to:

• Produce high-level professionals adept at climate change adaptation and mitigation through academic mobility across Africa.
• Conduct action-oriented research on climate adaptation, mitigation, and other environmental issues.
• Enhance students’ capacity through internships with climate-smart organizations.
• Strengthen partnerships and the capacity of participating institutions to foster climate action across Africa.

Scholarship Details

• Total Number of Scholarships: 35 Master’s and 12 PhDs from 2024 to 2028.
• Fields of Study: Environmental Sustainability, Climate/Weather Processes, Resilience of Food Production Systems, Gender-Climate-Food Nexus, Climate Change and Water Resources, and Ecosystem-based Adaptation.

Scholarship Positions

1. PhD Scholarships:
   • 6 Full-time PhD positions.
   • 6 Short-term PhD positions.
2. M.Sc. Scholarships:
   • 6 Full-time M.Sc. positions.
   • 6 Short-term M.Sc. positions.

Eligibility Criteria for the CREATE Green Africa Scholarship

• Applicants must be African candidates residing in Africa.
• Students can only apply to universities outside their home country.
• Female, disadvantaged, or vulnerable candidates are encouraged to apply.
• Academic Programs and Host Universities: Various climate-related programs across six African universities (see full list above).

Financial Coverage

• Subsistence Allowance:
  • €1,230/month for PhD candidates.
  • €890/month for M.Sc. candidates.
• Insurance: Accident, travel, and health insurance provided.
• Tuition and Research Contribution: Covers tuition fees, application fees, student union, registration, caution money, student ID, and quality assurance fees.

Application Process

1. Submission: Download and complete the application form available at CREATE-GreenAfrica Scholarships and send it with other required documents to the project coordinating office at [email protected].
2. Admission Requirements: Concurrently apply to the host university for admission.
3. Special Requirements for Host Universities:
   • University of Dar es Salaam and University of Ghana: Admission letter required at the time of scholarship application.
   • University of Free State, Mekelle University, Zimbabwe Open University, and University of Port Harcourt: Admission letter is not required at the time of scholarship application.
