…As Foursquare celebrates 70th anniversary
Sam Aboyeji, general overseer and senior pastor, Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, has assured Nigerians of a better country marked by peace, righteousness, and progress.
“We believe that with God’s help and our collective efforts, a better Nigeria will emerge – one marked by peace, righteousness, and progress,” Aboyeji said during the press conference held on Monday, July 14, 2025, to herald the church’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
According to him, the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, as a church, holds strongly to the doctrine of civil government, which is one of its 22 tenets of faith, recognising its responsibility to continually pray for the country, its leaders, and citizens.
The Global Foursquare Church is a 102-year ministry with presence in 156 countries across the world. However, the church was planted in Nigeria in 1955, through the missionary efforts of an American couple, Harold and Faye Curtis.
“The Foursquare Gospel Church, known globally as the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, is an evangelical and pentecostal denomination founded in 1923 by the renowned Canadian-American lady preacher and first female televangelist, Sister Aimee Semple McPherson, in Los Angeles, California, USA,” Aboyeji stated.
He disclosed that 70th anniversary of the church will be marked by a series of events aimed at spiritual renewal, community service, and unifying past and present members of the church, both locally and in the diaspora. According to him, the anniversary activities are tailored to reflect on the seven decades of God’s unwavering faithfulness and the church’s impactful mission in Nigeria and beyond.
“It is also organised to celebrate 70 years of a complete gospel, and will be centered around spiritual renewal and social engagement, guided by a mission to commit afresh to winning souls for Christ and growing our congregation through impactful community outreaches – using such initiatives as medical outreaches, soul-lifting musical experiences and targeted programs, as well as a robust community service to share God’s love,” Aboyeji stated.
According to him, the anniversary celebration will also serve as a platform for reconnecting with all who have been part of the World Mission Centre, including worshipers and members in the diaspora. He disclosed that the celebration will give recognition to those with outstanding contributions, to foster a spirit of unity and fellowship.
“As we mark this milestone, it is imperative to recognise and honour the visionary leaders who have shepherded this church through the years. These men of faith laid the foundation upon which we now stand: Rev. Harold Curtis (of blessed memory); Rev. Samuel Odunaike (of blessed memory); Rev. James Abayomi Boyejo (of blessed memory), and Rev. Gabriel Farombi, amongst other ministers and leaders.”
According to Aboyeji, their contributions to the ministry’s growth remain indelible in the annals of the church’s history, and that the Foursquare in Nigeria will always be grateful for their spiritual leadership and legacy.
