The permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, has called on Nigerians to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies as strategic tools for economic growth and national development.

Speaking at the Global Sustainable Technology and Innovation Community Conference (G-STIC 2025) held in Abuja on Tuesday, Esuabana said AI is reshaping global economies and urged Nigerians to leverage its transformative potential for the country’s progress rather than its misuse.

She noted that AI is revolutionizing key sectors—agriculture, health, education, energy, and governance—adding that its responsible adoption can optimize productivity, enhance policy efficiency, and create new opportunities in the digital economy.

The conference, jointly organized by the Senate and House Committees on Innovation, Science and Technology in collaboration with the National Centre for Technology Management (NACETEM), brought together policymakers, experts, and innovators to chart pathways for Nigeria’s technological advancement.

Esuabana emphasized that while AI poses both opportunities and risks, its positive applications could help Nigeria achieve inclusive growth and global competitiveness. She recalled how African scientists developed homegrown innovations during the COVID-19 pandemic that helped mitigate the spread of the virus, stressing the need for continued collaboration and creativity.

She urged stakeholders to work together to build a resilient, technology-driven nation that can withstand future challenges.

In separate remarks, the chairman, Senate Committee on Innovation, Science and Technology, Sen. Iya Abbas, and his House counterpart, Hon. Inuwa Garba, underscored the central role of technology in national development, calling for full deployment of emerging technologies to accelerate Nigeria’s economic transformation.

In his remarks, the director-general of NACETEM, Dr. Olushola Odusanya, described the G-STIC platform as an avenue to accelerate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovation, adding that the 2025 edition would explore how AI and related technologies can redefine work, education, and enterprise in Nigeria.

A statement by the ministry’s head of press and public relations, Mrs. Pauline Sule, noted that goodwill messages at the event stressed the need for Nigeria to keep pace with global technological trends transforming economies worldwide.
