Nigeria has once again demonstrated leadership in using technology to promote transparency, accountability and citizen engagement in governance.
At the 2025 Open Government Partnership Global Summit held in Spain, Nigeria emerged as a standout performer, earning two prestigious international awards that reaffirm its growing reputation as a trailblazer in digital governance.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with civil society organisation Dataphyte, led Nigeria’s efforts that secured the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East, recognising the country’s commitment to advancing open digital governance across the region. Nigeria further made history by clinching the thematic award as the overall global winner in the Digital Governance category out of 160 commitments submitted by 42 participating countries.
These awards underscore NITDA’s commitment to building an inclusive, citizen-centred digital ecosystem and highlight the effectiveness of Nigeria’s collaboration between government and civil society. Through initiatives anchored on openness, innovation and data-driven policymaking, the nation continues to show how digital transformation can deepen accountability and public trust in governance.
Nigeria’s success followed its submission of strategic commitments showcasing groundbreaking policies, platforms and partnerships aimed at making governance more participatory and technology-driven. These commitments reflect Nigeria’s digital transformation framework anchored on transparency, accessibility and inclusiveness, championed by NITDA under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
With these global recognitions, Nigeria has positioned itself as a continental leader and an influential voice shaping the future of open and digital governance worldwide. The honours serve as validation and motivation for continued efforts to expand citizen participation, promote data openness and strengthen accountability through innovative technology solutions that place people at the centre of governance.
