Christian leaders in Plateau State have announced plans to stage a peaceful protest over the continued killings in the state.
The protest, titled “2nd Peace Walk Against Continuous Killings,” is scheduled to hold on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at 9:00am.
This comes after fresh attacks in the early hours of Monday, where over 30 people were killed in Bassa communities.
Just last week, more than 50 others were also murdered in coordinated attacks across several communities in Bokkos Local Government Area.
Dr Gideon ParaMallam, President of the Gideon and Funmi ParaMallam Peace Foundation and a member of the protest planning committee, confirmed the development.
He stated that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Plateau State chapter, in collaboration with Church Denominational Leaders, is organising the protest.
“Between March 27th and April 2nd 2025, nearly 80 innocent lives have been brutally cut short in Bokkos LGA alone not counting victims in Bassa and other parts of Nigeria.
“This is heart-breaking and unacceptable. The evil of bloodshed in Nigeria is spreading and must be stopped now. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Plateau State Chapter and the Church Denominational Leaders have agreed to organise a 2nd Peace Walk Against Continuous Killings.
“It is a Peace Walk in honour of our martyred brothers and sisters. It is a call for justice and a call to end the bloodshed of innocent Nigerians.”
Participants have been asked to wear black on Easter Sunday and during the protest as a symbol of mourning, alongside red to demand an end to the killings and white to represent peaceful resistance.
ParaMallam explained, “On Easter Sunday (April 20th), we shall wear black as a symbol of mourning. On Monday (April 21st), we shall all wear black for mourning, red to demand an end to the killings and white to show we are peace-loving people, engaging in peaceful resistance to injustice.”
Protesters are expected to converge at PRTV Roundabout Junction in Jos and proceed to the New Government House, Little Rayfield, where their grievances will be presented to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.
He added, “We shall converge at PRTV Roundabout Junction and peacefully march to the New Government House, Little Rayfield where we shall present our case to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through our dear Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.”
ParaMallam called on all Christians to participate. “The Church on the Plateau calls on all Christians to arise in unity, grief and righteous protest. We must not be silent. We must let the blood of the innocent cry out for justice. Let us rise up and speak up and show our faith in action. The Peace Walk must be peaceful, prayerful and powerful.”
