The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to host the First Africa Raw Materials Summit 2025 (FRMS-25), scheduled to take place from May 20 to 22, 2025, in Abuja.
The director-general of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso announced this at a press briefing on the summit, themed “Shaping the Future of Africa’s Resource Landscape.”
According to him, the summit is a landmark event aimed at transforming Africa’s raw materials industry by bringing together researchers, policymakers, investors, industrial leaders and key stakeholders from across the continent and beyond. The goal is to explore innovative ideas, foster strategic partnerships and develop actionable solutions to unlock Africa’s full raw materials potential.
“We are hopeful that President Bola Tinubu will declare the summit open and we look forward to hosting the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, among other global figures,” Ike-Muonso stated.
He also revealed that 72 countries have been contacted to participate in the event, during which RMRDC will unveil a 10-year roadmap for managing Nigeria’s natural resources.
Ike-Muonso emphasized that the summit will focus on leveraging Africa’s vast natural resource wealth for sustainable industrialization, economic diversification, and global competitiveness. He noted that the initiative is expected to create three million jobs for Nigerians within the first four years.
The summit will address key industry challenges by focusing on economic diversification and industrial growth strategies, investment opportunities in raw materials processing and infrastructure, sustainable extraction and value-addition techniques, regional collaboration to strengthen Africa’s position in the global market, data-driven decision-making through the Raw Materials Information System (RMIS) and policy formulation for responsible resource management.
The event is expected to attract over 1,000 participants, including government officials, policymakers, industry players, investors and researchers.
“This summit is a movement to reshape Africa’s raw materials industry. By attending, stakeholders can drive industrial transformation, create jobs, and unlock Africa’s true economic potential,” Ike-Muonso said.
He urged media houses, policymakers, corporate entities and research institutions to participate in making the event a success.
“Now is the time to redefine Africa’s resource landscape and secure our place in the global industrial ecosystem,” he added.
