THE Philippine Center for Post-harvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) said Nigeria is seeking its expertise to help the latter in reducing food wastage.
PhilMech said earlier this month, Mersole Mellejor, Ambassador of the Philippines to Nigeria, visited the agency’s headquarters in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija to seek cooperation for advanced food preservation and mechanization technologies needed to reduce significant waste and inefficiencies in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
PhilMech said discussions also centered on integrating mechanization and post-harvest technologies such as solar drying systems and other preservation technologies into Nigeria’s food security strategy and developing tailored training programs for Nigerian agricultural stakeholders.
“PhilMech is committed to creating a customized training module designed to meet the specific needs of Nigerian farmers and officials. This initiative will include a detailed budgetary plan and involve accredited manufacturers to ensure effective implementation and technology transfer,” said PhilMech, in a statement.
Citing the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, PhilMech Nigeria’s agriculture sector is facing low technology adoption and land degradation.
It added over 70 percent of Nigerians engaged in agriculture are at the subsistence level.
PhilMech implements the country’s agricultural and fishery mechanization programs by developing protocols and processes.
